Early Childhood Program

Pre-K Program
Special Education Preschool is provided for children between the ages of 3 years to 5 years old who are eligible for special education and related services. Students are served through a continuum of program options in the Least Restrictive Environment appropriate for the child. Instructional activities, specialized instruction, and early childhood intervention services are provided for each child in accordance with a team developed, specialized Individualized Education Program (IEP). Related services may include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and curb-to-curb transportation.

Eligibility for the Special Education Preschool Program requires that children:

  • Are three to five years of age and not yet compulsory school age
  • Demonstrate a disability or exhibit significant delays
Documented deficits in one or more of the following areas must exist: communication skills, motor functioning, social-emotional/behavioral functioning, cognitive abilities, adaptive behavior, hearing or vision as determined by a multidisciplinary team through multi-factored evaluation.
Can your three-year-old:
  • Recognize several colors
  • Count to 3
  • Put 2 words together
  • Plays appropriately with toys
  • Talk clearly enough that family can understand them
Can your four-year-old:
  • Name colors and shapes
  • Count to 5
  • Put 3 words together
  • Answer questions
  • Talk clearly enough that non-family can understand them
If you have concerns about your child’s development, or if your child has not yet met the above milestones, or if he/she is currently receiving private speech/language therapy, he/she may be eligible for the developmental preschool program. Screenings are held monthly (August – April) at Harrison and Pillar Falls Elementary. During the appointment, you and your child will meet with staff who will screen in the areas of cognitive development (learning skills), speech and language, social/play skills, and hearing. The screening takes approximately 45 minutes.
TFSD Developmental Preschool offers monthly screeners for children ages 3 to 5 years old; call for an appointment – During the summer: 208-789-0188; During the school year: Harrison at 208-733-4229 and Pillar Falls at 208-732-7570. Students who live East of Blue Lakes are in the Pillar Falls preschool zone. Students who live West of Blue Lakes are in the Harrison preschool zone.

The goals and activities of the Special Education Preschool Program represent the cooperative efforts of early childhood intervention specialists, related service providers and parents working together. Each child’s participation in a program that provides readiness, socialization, language and literacy skills as well as meeting individual needs, prepares him or her for success in school.
